Julie, Nyr, and Kathleen serve as YSE communication coaches. With the support of our director, William, we focus on innovative coaching techniques for YSE and future academic and professional contexts.
Julie has coached graduate students at Yale in several capacities since 2001. From her Yale English Language Institute roles to consulting for graduate departments in language assessment and communicating research, she has helped hundreds of students and clients expand and refine their repertoire of skills. Her coaching specialties include presentation preparation and delivery, interview strategy, precise language, and vocal training to convey authority. Her background includes policy research at Albert Einstein Medical Center, research grant administration at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as extensive communication assessment, mentoring, and individual coaching experience. Most recently, Julie has allocated more of her schedule to preparing YSE students for high stakes events such as Economics job talks, TEDx talks, and venture capital competitions.
Kathleen has worked with graduate students from all over the world on oral and written communications skills. In her work in both the academic and corporate sectors, she helps students and business professionals deliver more dynamic presentations and job interviews, including message design, delivery style, and vocal image. As an experienced writer and editor, she focuses on enhancing students’ skills in writing with clarity and coherence. Kathleen has conducted numerous workshops in global communication skills, public speaking, and writing skills for PhDs, and has presented papers at conferences in the U.S. and internationally. Her publication credits include a chapter in Modern British Women Writers by Greenwood Press.
Nyr works with clients in healthcare, business, fashion, design, law, telecommunications, and other areas to facilitate interpersonal and language skills. He is fluent in Mandarin, and has extensive training in linguistics. Nyr excels at helping clients to navigate complex multi-cultural barriers in the workplace. He has trained managers for the New York City government and advises Ph.D. candidates about their interview and presentation skills. He earned his A.B. at Princeton and has done graduate work at Cornell. Nyr's style is to pinpoint key motivators and use these as a springboard to achieve communicative excellence.
